Modern Foreign Language
To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.
Chinese Proverb
Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
Mandarin lessons allow children to learn about the language, writing and culture of China and beyond.
We are thrilled to be working with the British Council to deliver our Mandarin teaching. We host a language assistant from China each year who delivers our modern foreign language lessons.
We have chosen Mandarin as our language of choice because it offers children a glimpse into a very different culture as well as another language.
All of our Key Stage 2 classes have a one hour Mandarin lesson each week.
